India launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate its nationals amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. On June 17, 110 Indian students from northern Iran were safely escorted across the border into Armenia under the supervision of Indian missions.

The evacuated group, which landed in New Delhi early on June 19, included 90 students from Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for the timely evacuation.

More than 4,000 Indian nationals reside in Iran, with about half being students, many pursuing medical degrees. Reports indicate over 13,000 Indian students are in Iran overall.

The Indian Embassy in Iran has been actively assisting nationals to move from conflict zones to safer areas and coordinating their evacuation. The government also set up a 24x7 control room in New Delhi to address concerns of Indians stuck in Iran and their families.

The Government of India acknowledged the cooperation of the Iranian and Armenian governments in facilitating the evacuation process smoothly. Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister engaged with the External Affairs Minister to ensure the welfare and safety of Kashmiri students.

One student, Faizan Ali from Kerman University of Medical Sciences, described the sudden change in security conditions, noting, “There was fear all around. We heard gunshots.”

This operation highlights India’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad amid regional instability and conflict.
