India launches largest-ever evacuation from Iran: 10,000 citizens including 1,500 students

India has initiated its largest-ever evacuation operation from Iran, relocating over 10,000 citizens, including 1,500 students, amid escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel.

The operation involves moving students from prominent institutions such as Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Islamic Azad University, and Iran University of Medical Sciences. Additional evacuations are planned from Shahid Beheshti University in Tajrish, Urmia near the Turkish border, and Qom.

New Delhi is undertaking an unprecedented scale of evacuation on Iranian soil, reflecting the seriousness of the situation. This follows India's earlier efforts in October 2023, when it launched Operation Ajay to repatriate over 1,340 individuals, including 1,309 Indian nationals, via six special chartered flights amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.

"New Delhi is bracing for an operation of a scale it has never attempted before on Iranian soil," highlighting the complexity and urgency of the mission.

The evacuation underscores India's commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad during regional conflicts, particularly students who form a significant portion of the stranded population.
