India's Operation Sindhu has successfully evacuated 827 Indian nationals from Iran amid escalating conflict between Iran and Israel.

The operation, launched in response to the deteriorating security situation, has also been extended to assist Nepalese and Sri Lankan citizens stranded in Iran following formal requests from their governments.

"So far, 517 Indian nationals have come back to India from Iran under Operation Sindhu," said Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

The evacuation flights have been arriving regularly, with the latest flight landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport from Mashhad, Iran.

Among those evacuated was Fadila Kachakkaran, a Malayali student pursuing her second-semester MBBS at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, who arrived safely in New Delhi on June 21, 2025.

Her father, Muhammed Kachakkaran, a civil engineer based in Saudi Arabia, was present to receive her. Kerala House in Delhi is providing accommodation for Keralite evacuees until they can return home.

The Indian government has coordinated closely with state authorities, including Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who directed the formation of a special team to assist citizens caught in conflict zones.

Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao stated, "The Indian government has been working to bring back Indians stranded in Iran by providing them all possible assistance. The state government has been coordinating with the Centre and trying to ensure safe return of people from our state who are in Iran."

India's embassy in Tehran has also issued emergency contact numbers and urged Nepalese and Sri Lankan nationals to reach out for evacuation assistance.

Iran has cooperated by opening its airspace to facilitate the evacuation flights.

This operation reflects India's ongoing commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad during international crises, continuing a history of evacuation missions.

"This is not the first time the Indian government has conducted an operation to evacuate its citizens from abroad," noted reports.

Efforts continue to repatriate all stranded nationals safely amid the ongoing conflict, which began on June 13 with Israel's airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites.

The operation also includes efforts to secure the release of Nepalese nationals detained in Iran due to immigration issues.

Operation Sindhu remains active as tensions persist in the region.
