A Meghalaya court has ordered an eight-day police custody for Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime suspect in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya.
The couple married on May 11 and traveled to Meghalaya on May 21. They were reported missing on May 23, and Raja's body was found on June 2 in a gorge near a waterfall in Sohra, East Khasi Hills district.
The investigation, codenamed
Operation Honeymoon, revealed that Sonam allegedly conspired with her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha and hired three men—Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi—to kill Raja. She reportedly paid
920 lakh to the contract killers after the murder.
According to Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, "The FIR clearly mentions that Raja was murdered with a dao (machete) and his valuables were taken. Sonam's involvement in paying the killers and offering a large sum afterwards strongly points to a conspiracy."
Sonam is accused of orchestrating the murder with clinical precision, including positioning the killers behind Raja and instructing them to carry out the attack in a secluded area. The autopsy confirmed Raja died from two sharp blows to the head.
The police have reconstructed the crime scene in Sohra during Sonam's custody. The investigation spanned three states—Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh—with evidence collected from residences and other locations.
Sonam's brother has publicly supported Raja's family and vowed to fight for justice, while Sonam claims in custody that she was kidnapped and drugged. The case has shocked the nation due to its premeditated and cold-blooded nature.
