The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of persistent heatwave conditions across north India until June 13, with temperatures soaring above 45C in Delhi-NCR and reaching 46.4C in Haryana.

IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava stated, In Delhi-NCR, the temperature is expected to rise above 45C today and tomorrow, creating heatwave conditions in isolated places. Other northern states including Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana are also expected to experience severe heat.

Temperature readings from various locations highlight the intensity: 43.3C at Safdarjung, 44.3C at Palam, 44.9C at Ridge, and 45.3C at Ayanagar in Delhi, with Haryana hitting 46.4C.

Meanwhile, southern India is preparing for an active monsoon phase. The IMD forecasts heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across South Peninsular India, especially in Konkan, Goa, and parts of Maharashtra and Goa between June 12 and 16.

An orange alert has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall (12cm-20cm in 24 hours) in Nilgiris and Coimbatore ghat areas from June 13 to 16, with several districts expecting similar intensity on June 15.

The northeastern states will continue to receive heavy monsoon showers, with thunderstorms and lightning expected to persist.

The IMD noted, The monsoon is expected to enter an active phase, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall at several locations and isolated extremely heavy downpours across South Peninsular India.

This contrasting weather pattern underscores the challenges faced by India as the north endures extreme heat while the south braces for intense monsoon rains, raising concerns about health, agriculture, and infrastructure.
