The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a seven-day rain alert for Karnataka, warning of widespread moderate to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds until June 18.

The alert covers almost all districts, with coastal Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada, under a red alert due to heavy rains since Saturday afternoon. This has caused significant disruptions in daily life, including waterlogging and submerged roads, particularly in Mangaluru city where traffic has been severely affected.

"Scattered moderate to heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds is likely to occur in Keravalli and Malnad districts of the state today," the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) stated on X (formerly Twitter).

The IMD's latest bulletin highlights "extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm/24 hours) likely at isolated places over Coastal Karnataka on June 15," with similar conditions expected in South Interior Karnataka and Kerala until June 16.

Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts are forecast to receive intermittent rain with gusty winds up to 50 km/h until June 16, while Agumbe in Shivamogga district recorded the highest rainfall of 11 cm on Saturday.

Temperatures across Karnataka are expected to range between 21 and 27 degrees Celsius, with Bengaluru seeing light to moderate rain and cloudy skies until June 18.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the southwest monsoon, which had been inactive for nearly two weeks, has resumed with intensity, raising concerns over flooding and infrastructure impact.

"The red alert remains in effect until the morning of June 16," officials warned, urging residents to stay cautious amid ongoing heavy rainfall.

This prolonged monsoon activity underscores the need for preparedness across Karnataka's diverse regions, from coastal belts to interior districts.
