Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's historic visit to Cyprus, the first in 23 years, underscores a strategic renewal of bilateral ties and regional cooperation.

The visit, beginning June 15, focuses on leveraging Cyprus's strategic location in the eastern Mediterranean to enhance the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a key trade and connectivity project.

"One of the objectives of our discussions is the connection of India with Europe through the region of the wider Middle East, (and) its entry into Europe through the Republic of Cyprus," Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said.

Modi's trip also aims to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, digital innovation, education, and regional security. At a business roundtable in Limassol, Modi highlighted India's rapid economic growth, noting it is now the world's fifth-largest economy and on track to become the third.

"India has experienced a significant digital revolution, with 50 per cent of digital transactions worldwide happening through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI)," Modi said, inviting investors to leverage India's favorable economic policies.

The visit carries geopolitical significance amid rising Turkey-Pakistan ties and regional tensions. Cyprus, an EU member and upcoming EU Council president in 2026, offers India a strategic foothold in Europe.

Modi was conferred Cyprus's highest civilian honor, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, symbolizing strong bilateral friendship.

The two nations signed multiple MoUs, including a notable agreement between India's GIFT City and the Cyprus Stock Exchange, fostering collaboration in fintech and financial services.

"This is not an era of war. Resolution through dialogue and restoration of stability is the call of humanity," Modi stated, reflecting shared concerns over conflicts in West Asia and Europe.

Overall, Modi's Cyprus visit lays groundwork for enhanced economic, strategic, and diplomatic engagement, positioning India for deeper integration with Europe through Cyprus's pivotal role.
