The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is poised to kick off construction for
8,500 homes in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar, a project that spans
33.15 hectares and will unfold in four phases.
The initial phase will commence on a
17-acre parcel where the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has already cleared
4,053 slums. Construction is expected to start soon after contractors are appointed, with the first phase aimed at providing housing for
8,500 local residents.
The SRA has successfully identified
14,500 eligible families for resettlement under this initiative, which is part of a broader government effort to enhance housing and infrastructure in the region.
In addition, the Maharashtra government has approved a new
Housing Policy 2025 that aims to construct
35 lakh homes by 2030 for economically weaker sections and low-income groups. This policy includes measures such as a government land bank and a
₹2,000 crore fund for self-redevelopment, which will significantly impact urban development and housing in the state.
The policy also emphasizes
green building practices and climate-resilient construction methods, aligning with Maharashtra's ambition of becoming a
$1 trillion economy.
