Bengaluru's recent heavy rainfall, totaling over 240 mm, has prompted Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to ban underground parking in low-lying areas. The flooding left many vehicles stranded and resulted in the rescue of about 150 individuals.
Shivakumar stated, "Many people have built homes near lakes and in low-lying areas. This has been a big learning experience for us. I have told my officers that in the future, no one should be allowed to build a basement in such areas."
The city recorded 105.5 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, marking the second-highest single-day rainfall since 2011.
Surya, an IT professional, expressed his distress, stating, "For the past three days, it has been a distressing experience. A single instance of rainfall caused a nearly five-foot increase in water levels, inundating our entire home."
The administration has also announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for families affected by rainfall-related incidents.
As the city grapples with the aftermath, major IT firms like Cognizant have advised employees to work from home due to the severe weather conditions.
