The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a significant project to address the waste crisis at the Deonar dumping ground by issuing a tender worth
Rs 2,368 crore. This project aims to process
23,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, necessitating the mobilization of
1,200 trucks each day.
Currently, the Deonar site is overwhelmed with
1.85 crore metric tonnes of legacy waste, some of which has been accumulating for nearly a century. The BMC's ambitious plan includes bioremediation, a process that utilizes natural elements like air, sunlight, and microorganisms to treat waste. The initial phase will involve mechanized excavation to reduce the waste piles.
Mumbai generates approximately
7,300 metric tonnes of waste daily, with most of it directed to the Deonar and Kanjurmarg dumping grounds. The BMC's tender reflects a growing urgency to tackle this issue, as contractors raised concerns during a pre-bid meeting about the
three-year deadline for clearing the site.
In addition to this project, the BMC is also revising its solid waste management byelaws, which include a user fee and mandatory waste segregation, aiming to enhance waste management efficiency and compliance among residents.
