Sunjay Kapur’s sudden death - family and Bollywood mourn industrialist at 53

Sunjay Kapur, a prominent Indian industrialist and former husband of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, died suddenly at age 53 on June 12, 2025, in the UK.
He suffered a fatal heart attack while playing polo at the Guards Polo Club, reportedly triggered after accidentally swallowing a bee that blocked his windpipe.

"In another unbelievable event, Sunjay Kapur (Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband) was on the polo ground, a bee went into his mouth (yes madhumakki on the polo ground) stung him and blocked his windpipe, he couldn’t breathe so he asked the game to be stopped but immediately died of a cardiac arrest. Such tragic news," actor Kangana Ranaut wrote on Instagram.

Kapur was chairman and non-executive director of Sona Comstar, a company specializing in auto parts for electric vehicles. He was the son of Dr. Surinder Kapur, founder of the Sona Group.

"It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Mr. Sunjay J. Kapur, Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Sona Comstar, following a sudden heart attack in England, UK, on 12th June 2025, at the age of 53," the company stated.

Sunjay was married to Karisma Kapoor from 2003 until their divorce in 2016. They had two children, daughter Samaira (b. 2005) and son Kiaan (b. 2011). After their separation, he married Priya Sachdev, with whom he had a son, Azarias.

Hours before his death, Kapur expressed condolences on social media for the victims of the Air India crash in Ahmedabad.

Friends and family have been mourning his sudden demise. Actress Shalini Passi described him as "full of life" and a "role model".

His alma mater, The Doon School, paid tribute, calling him a "distinguished Old Boy" and a valued member of their board.

Legal complications related to his US citizenship may delay funeral arrangements.

Kapur was also a patron of the polo team Aureus, reflecting his passion for the sport.

His sudden death has deeply affected both the business and Bollywood communities, highlighting the fragility of life even for those in the public eye.
