Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his historic two-day visit to Cyprus on June 16, 2025, the first by an Indian leader in over two decades.
During the visit, Modi was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, Cyprus' highest civilian honor, which he dedicated to the enduring friendship between India and Cyprus.

The visit, at the invitation of President Nikos Christodoulides, included wide-ranging talks to boost bilateral ties and cooperation in fintech, renewable energy, and high-tech industries.

"I am confident that in the time to come, our active partnership will touch new heights," Modi said after receiving the award.

Modi also gifted a luxurious Kashmiri silk carpet to President Christodoulides, symbolizing cultural ties.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regional peace and stability, expressing concern over ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe. Modi stated, "We expressed worry over the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe. We believe this is not an era of war."

India and Cyprus agreed to institutionalize regular political dialogue and to work on a new five-year Action Plan covering diplomatic, economic, defense, and cultural cooperation.

A key highlight was the identification of the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), with Cyprus positioned as a strategic logistics hub for Indian trade routes into Europe.

Modi's visit also carries strategic significance amid Pakistan's growing ties with Turkey, given Cyprus' geopolitical position.

Following Cyprus, Modi departed for Canada to attend the G7 summit in Kananaskis, marking his first visit to Canada in ten years, where he will engage with global leaders on energy security, technology, and innovation.

"Gratitude to President Christodoulides for showing me parts of the very historic city of Nicosia. We look forward to closer people-to-people linkages with Cyprus!" Modi tweeted.

This three-nation tour, including Croatia after Canada, underscores India's expanding global diplomatic and economic outreach.
