India’s artificial intelligence sector is rapidly expanding, with over
250 AI startups emerging in the last 18 months, according to Prashanth Prakash, Partner at Accel.
This surge is supported by major IT firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which are investing in
Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to provide the scalable compute infrastructure necessary for AI development, confirmed Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
Experts emphasize that India’s strength in engineering talent must be paired with investments in research and development, access to
high-quality datasets, and robust computing power to sustain growth.
Prakash highlighted the importance of voice-based AI, stating,
“Voice will be the most natural interface for the next billion users,” underscoring the need for AI solutions that can process multiple Indian languages to drive widespread adoption.
This strategic focus on GPUs and multilingual AI aims to position India as a global leader in AI innovation, leveraging its vast talent pool and growing startup ecosystem.
The combined efforts of government, venture capital, and IT giants are fueling a dynamic environment where AI technologies can thrive, addressing both local and global challenges.
“India’s advantage in engineering talent must be complemented by deep investments in research and development, high-quality datasets, and access to scalable compute infrastructure,” said Prakash, reflecting the holistic approach needed to sustain this momentum.
