India is set to conduct fresh civil defence mock drills on Thursday in four border states: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir, amid escalating tensions with Pakistan.
These drills aim to test civilian preparedness, emergency response coordination, and evacuation protocols in the event of renewed cross-border hostilities or terrorist attacks. Government officials confirmed that local civil defence teams, police, disaster response units, and medical staff will participate to ensure inter-agency communication is effective.
"The exercise will evaluate emergency response coordination and civilian evacuation plans," officials said.
This development follows the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists and injured several others. In response, India launched
Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6-7, targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
"The Indian military launched Operation Sindoor hours after the drills, targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir," reports noted.
The drills come weeks after the Ministry of Home Affairs conducted
Operation Abhyas, a nationwide mock drill on May 7, hours before Operation Sindoor was launched.
These civil defence exercises underscore India's focus on strengthening civilian and official readiness amid ongoing security challenges along its western and northern borders.
The drills also serve as a strategic measure to enhance coordination among various agencies in the face of potential terror threats or cross-border conflicts, reflecting heightened alertness following recent violent incidents.
