Despite the disappointment of failing to secure an IPL title as captain of Gujarat Titans, losing to Mumbai Indians in the 2025 Eliminator, Gill views the Test series in England as a far greater opportunity. “IPL comes every year and you get to have a crack at it every year. In my opinion, winning a Test Series in England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa (collectively SENA countries) is bigger,” he said during a pre-match press conference.

He’s a smart cricketer, he’s got a good brain for the game and understands his game.” Another added, “Shubman is a talented player and very, very eager to go out and compete hard and bring laurels to the nation. Before the England tour, Gill sought guidance from former captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who shared insights about the challenges of playing in England. “I met both of them in the IPL and they told me about their experiences, especially here in England, and some of the challenges that we might face here,” Gill revealed.
