Florian Wirtz has completed a record-breaking transfer to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee reportedly up to
£116 million ($156 million), making him one of the most expensive players in soccer history.
The 22-year-old German midfielder, who scored
57 goals and provided 64 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen, expressed his ambition to "win everything" at Liverpool. His move reunites him with Jeremie Frimpong, who also recently joined Liverpool, sparking hope for a strong partnership on the pitch.
Wirtz credited Frimpong for helping him improve his English, saying,
"Yes, he was my neighbour in the changing room, he sat directly next to me and I had to speak English with him... he was teaching me a lot and making me speak in more English and better English."Frimpong, who moved to England at age seven and spent nine years in Manchester City's academy before moving to Celtic, welcomed the reunion, stating,
"I think it's a really nice thing that we can play together again at a new club, at maybe a bigger club, and make the move together. I'm really looking forward to standing on the pitch with him again."Liverpool's new signing is seen as a major boost for manager Arne Slot's squad, with Wirtz aiming to help the club contend for major trophies. Bayer Leverkusen's managing director of sport, Simon Rolfes, praised Wirtz as one of the best players in the world and a special person.
Wirtz's transfer fee places him alongside elite players like Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Philippe Coutinho in terms of transfer market value, underscoring Liverpool's ambition to build a formidable team.
"I'm very excited to start something new. I wanted to try something outside the Bundesliga," Wirtz told Liverpool's website, signaling his readiness for the Premier League challenge.
This high-profile signing is expected to significantly strengthen Liverpool's midfield and attacking options as they aim for domestic and European success.
