UN General Assembly extends Volker Türk's term as rights chief; U.S. and France clash over human rights leadership.

The UN General Assembly has reappointed Volker Türk as High Commissioner for Human Rights, extending his term until 2030 with a vote of 144-10.¹

This decision sparked a heated exchange between the U.S. and France, with France criticizing the U.S. for its diminished role in human rights advocacy.²³⁶⁷

“The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore,” stated the official French mission account, highlighting a perceived isolation of the U.S. alongside countries like North Korea and Russia.

In response, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz accused France of deflecting from its own support for Türk, labeling their vote as shameful.⁴⁵

“It is disappointing — though not surprising — that this is how France deflects on its shameful vote to coddle some of the worst human rights abusers,” Waltz remarked on X.

Notably, a 2024 analysis by UN Watch revealed that Türk criticized the U.S. more frequently than he did China, North Korea, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar combined, raising questions about his impartiality.
