Prime Minister Narendra Modi's participation in the 2025 G7 Summit in Canada marked a significant diplomatic engagement amid complex global and regional challenges.

The summit, held at Kananaskis, focused on pressing issues such as energy security, technological innovation—especially the AI-energy nexus—and geopolitical tensions including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and West Asia stability.

"India is prepared to act as a bridge between global powers and the Global South," said External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, highlighting India's growing diplomatic role.

Modi's visit, his first to Canada in a decade, also aimed to strengthen Indo-Canadian ties. A joint working group was proposed to address transnational crimes and concerns related to Khalistan separatism, reflecting efforts to manage bilateral challenges.

However, Modi's arrival was met with large-scale protests by Khalistani groups in Alberta, organized mainly by the US-based Sikhs for Justice. Protestors openly glorified the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with some threatening violence against Modi.

"Yes, I am ready to kill Modi politics, [to] ambush Modi," declared a protestor in viral videos, underscoring the tensions.

Despite these disruptions, Modi engaged with G7 leaders and outreach nations, focusing on repairing ties with Canada and addressing global economic and security issues.

The summit also revealed growing divisions within the G7 on trade, technology, climate, and regional security, with Modi positioned to navigate these complexities to promote India's security and prosperity.

Indian-origin Canadians expressed strong support for Modi's visit, viewing it as a pivotal moment to unlock new trade and economic opportunities, especially in technology and energy.

"This visit marks a pivotal moment to unlock new trade and economic opportunities between Canada and India," said Kushagr Sharma, president of the Canadian Hindu Chamber of Commerce.

Modi's consistent presence at the G7 since 2019 signals India's rising importance on the global stage, as it balances relations with Western powers, China, and the Global South.

The summit underscored Modi's dual challenge: addressing global tensions while managing domestic and diaspora-related protests, all while advancing India's strategic interests.
