OpenAI targets monetizable demand in late 2025 to launch ChatGPT super assistant

OpenAI is targeting late 2025 to launch a ChatGPT "super assistant" designed to be an intelligent AI entity with "T-shaped skills" that can handle both simple daily tasks and complex challenges.

According to an internal document shared with the US Department of Justice, the super assistant will "deeply understand" users and serve as their interface to the internet, integrating seamlessly with existing technology such as smartphones.

"At home, it should help answer questions, play music, and suggest recipes. On the go, it should help you get to places, find the best restaurants, or catch up with friends. At work, it should help you take meeting notes, or prepare for the big presentation," the document states.

OpenAI describes ChatGPT as "T-shaped" because it combines "broad skills for daily tasks that are tedious, and deep expertise for tasks that most people find impossible," such as coding.

The company is also exploring hardware integration, with design input from Jony Ive, potentially creating a dedicated AI companion gadget that could even replace smartphones.

The roadmap for 2025 is split into two phases: the first half focuses on building out the super assistant's capabilities, while the second half aims to generate "enough monetizable demand to pursue these new models."

This ambitious plan signals OpenAI's intent to expand ChatGPT beyond a conversational AI into a versatile, always-available assistant that can enhance productivity and daily life, while also establishing a sustainable business model.
