India’s Shubman Gill to bat No. 4 as KL Rahul opens in England Test series

India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill will shift to No. 4 batting position, with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal opening in the five-Test England tour starting June 20. This strategic batting order change follows retirements of Kohli and Rohit, aiming to balance experience and fresh talent.

India’s cricket team is set for a significant transition as Shubman Gill takes over as Test captain and moves to bat at No. 4 in the five-Test series against England starting June 20 at Headingley.

Gill, who has previously captained the Gujarat Titans in the IPL and led India in five T20 internationals, replaces the retired Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, marking a new era for the team. KL Rahul is expected to open the batting alongside Gill moving down the order.

"It is understood that has been informally indicated by head coach that he will be required to bat upfront. If that plan holds, Rahul is expected to partner at the top, with Gill likely to move down to No. 4."

The squad announced includes key pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep. However, Bumrah’s availability is uncertain for all five Tests due to workload management.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, "Jasprit Bumrah won't be available for all five Tests against England. 'Whether it's four or three...we'll see based on how the series goes and how his workload is...Even if he's fit for 3-4 Tests...he'll be an asset for us.'"

Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain, supporting Gill’s leadership in a squad described as "depleted" following the retirement of senior players.

This series will test the new leadership and team dynamics as India aims to maintain its competitive edge in the post-Kohli and Rohit era.

"There is much anticipation surrounding the squad as it will be the first time after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from the format that Indian cricket team will play a Test series."

Kohli and Rohti retire; Gill rises as captaincy candidate

I personally would've gone with Bumrah just for this tour. I saw him captain in Perth just before Christmas and he was outstanding.
