The IndiaAI Mission has significantly bolstered its AI development capabilities by expanding its GPU infrastructure to over 34,000 GPUs, sourced from industry leaders Nvidia, AMD, AWS, and Intel. This expansion supports the mission's goal to democratize AI access and accelerate indigenous foundational AI model development.

Three startups—Soket AI, Gnani.ai, and Gan.ai—have been selected to develop open-source foundational AI models tailored to India's diverse linguistic and sectoral needs. Soket AI is tasked with creating a 120 billion parameter model optimized for sectors like defense, healthcare, and education.

Gnani.ai, backed by Info Edge Ventures, will develop a 14 billion parameter voice AI model capable of multilingual, real-time speech processing with advanced reasoning. Gan.ai aims to build a 70 billion parameter multilingual text-to-speech (TTS) model with superhuman capabilities.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the government's commitment, stating, “This is a big change, and AI is here for good,” highlighting the mission's focus on open-source models and widespread accessibility.

The mission, backed by a $1.2 billion fund, also supports startups and academia by providing subsidized cloud compute platforms and creating datasets in Indian languages to train AI models. The addition of 16,000 new GPUs recently approved further enhances India's capacity to develop large language models (LLMs) and small language models (SLMs), foundational to generative AI applications.

This initiative marks a strategic push to position India as a leader in AI innovation, fostering homegrown technology solutions with broad societal impact.
