India's Cabinet has approved a significant ₹10,300 crore funding boost for the India AI Mission, aimed at accelerating the country's artificial intelligence capabilities and startup ecosystem.

The government announced the addition of 15,916 new GPUs, bringing the total compute infrastructure available to startups and researchers to over 34,000 GPUs. This massive compute boost is designed to enable the training of large AI models domestically.

"Whichever sector they focus on, they must be among the top five in the world," said the IT and Electronics Minister, emphasizing the mission's ambition to position India as a global AI leader.

The India AI Mission is a national program focused on developing indigenous AI capabilities, infrastructure, datasets, and startups through a structured public-private partnership model. It aims to democratize AI access and use across governance, startups, and citizens.

Key objectives include: building indigenous foundation and language models, promoting ethical, safe, and responsible AI, and creating a self-reliant AI innovation ecosystem.

The government has also loaded 367 datasets on AI Kosh, supporting the growing app ecosystem. Additionally, three new teams—Soket AI, Gan AI, and Gnani AI—have been selected to build indigenous AI models, following the earlier selection of Sarvam AI.

This initiative reflects significant progress in the India AI Mission, with a focus on the "democratisation of technology," aiming to empower startups and researchers with cutting-edge infrastructure and resources.
