Chinese students fear discrimination and rethink US study plans after Rubio visa crackdown

Following Secretary of State Marco Rubio's announcement to aggressively revoke visas of Chinese students linked to the CCP or critical fields, many Chinese nationals in the US now face heightened fears of discrimination and uncertainty about their future, potentially impacting US higher education and research sectors.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a crackdown on Chinese student visas, targeting those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields, intensifying scrutiny amid ongoing US-China tensions.

The policy aims to "aggressively revoke" visas, raising fears among nearly 300,000 Chinese students in the US about discrimination, safety, and immigration challenges.

"The State Department would work with the Department of Homeland Security to aggressively revoke visas of Chinese students," Rubio stated.

Chinese students and families are reconsidering US study plans as alternative education options grow globally, including in China.

A Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson condemned the policy as "fully unjustified" and damaging to the US reputation.

Gisela Perez Kusakawa, executive director of the Asian American Scholar Forum, warned the policy could harm US research ambitions.

"The new policy would only serve to harm the U.S. and its own research ambitions," Kusakawa said.

Despite concerns, research indicates most Chinese students hope to build lives in America, challenging assumptions about espionage.

"While theres been a longstanding belief that Chinese international students would take intelligence back to China, research shows that most hope to start their lives in America," the report noted.

This move escalates the Trump administration's confrontational stance, following reports of Chinese nationals engaging in alleged surreptitious activities.

The crackdown has sparked anxiety over potential racism and discrimination, complicating the US's position as a global education hub.

Nearly 300,000 Chinese nationals hold student visas in the US, though it remains unclear if all or only some will be targeted.

The policy reflects broader geopolitical tensions, with the US also imposing export controls on technology to China.

Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu criticized US actions as "overstretching the concept of national security" and "maliciously blocking and suppressing China."
