China's LineShine supercomputer has made history by achieving 2.198 exaflops of performance, making it the first supercomputer to exceed two exaflops using only central processing units (CPUs). LineShine, developed by the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen, has surpassed the previous record held by the US's El Capitan, which achieved 1.809 exaflops. This marks the first time since 2017 that a Chinese supercomputer has topped the rankings, highlighting China's advancements in technology despite previous sanctions that limited access to powerful chips.4
The supercomputer operates on approximately 42.2 megawatts of electricity, achieving an efficiency of 52.07 Gigaflops/Watt. It also leads the High Performance Conjugate Gradients Benchmark (HPCG) with 22.00 HPCG-Petaflop per second. Jack Dongarra, a co-founder of TOP500, noted, “This is the first time a computer with only CPUs has reached exascale.”
