CuspAI, a Cambridge-based AI startup, has raised $450 million in a Series B funding round led by Kleiner Perkins and NEA, valuing the company at $2.6 billion. This investment, which includes backing from Jeff Bezos and the UK government, aims to accelerate the discovery of new materials critical for industries such as semiconductors and clean energy.12

The funding will enable CuspAI to expand internationally, establishing a new office in Singapore and increasing its workforce across Cambridge, Amsterdam, Berlin, Tokyo, and the U.S. The company plans to utilize its AI platform, MIRA, to significantly shorten research timelines and reduce reliance on scarce metals like iridium and ruthenium.

CuspAI also launched the AI Materials Foundry, a coalition of over 45 companies including Nvidia and Meta, aimed at combining advanced AI models and scientific data to expedite the development of next-generation materials. Co-founders Dr. Chad Edwards and Professor Max Welling emphasized the urgency of their mission, stating, "If we don’t make progress fast, the next 50 years of industrial progress will be constrained by a single challenge: the world needs materials that don’t yet exist."

The UK government's investment is part of its sovereign AI fund, which supports early-stage British AI companies. CuspAI is the fourth company to receive funding from this initiative, which typically invests between £1 million and £10 million in startups with UK-based operations.5

Josh Coyne from Kleiner Perkins noted, "Most big leaps in technology come down to a material, and the next set... is stuck waiting on materials nobody has discovered yet. CuspAI built a search engine that changes that."
