Nernst Electric has raised $2 million in seed funding from Hatch Blue's Blue Revolution Fund to develop on-site oxygen generation technology for fish farms. This funding will enable the construction of a demonstration unit to validate the system's performance in real farming environments.12
The technology generates high-purity oxygen, exceeding 99 percent purity, directly on-site using ceramic membranes to separate oxygen from ambient air. This innovation provides fish farms with a reliable supply of oxygen at a lower cost and with higher energy efficiency, reducing reliance on conventional supply chains.34
“For decades, the limitations of conventional on-site oxygen generation have held back productivity across industries including aquaculture, mining, metallurgy, and steelmaking,” said Nernst CEO Nick Farandos. He emphasized that their reactor technology removes barriers, enabling efficient oxygen production with near-zero maintenance and the lowest operating costs in the industry.
Hatch Blue's Managing Partner Carsten Krome noted that Nernst's platform not only addresses critical oxygen supply for fish farms but also has industrial-scale applications across heavy industries. “Aquaculture is generating commercially attractive innovation at pace,” Krome added, highlighting the sector's strong fundamentals.
Caitriona Kelleher, managing director of early-stage investments at Hatch Blue, praised Nernst's rapid progress since joining their accelerator program, stating, “The team came in with a manufacturing concept and have built it into a working system ready for its first aquaculture deployment.”
