Pune witnessed a significant early monsoon rainfall on May 27, with Wadgaonsheri recording the highest precipitation at
33.5 mm. This event marks an early surge in the southwest monsoon, which meteorologists attribute to a combination of favourable atmospheric and oceanic conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a subdivision-wise forecast predicting
above-normal rainfall for Maharashtra's four meteorological subdivisions: Konkan & Goa, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha during the June to September monsoon season.
Among these, Central Maharashtra and Marathwada are expected to receive the highest rainfall, with probabilities of
110% and
112% respectively, indicating a potentially robust monsoon season for the region.
In Pune, moderate rainfall was widespread on May 27, with Shivajinagar recording
15.7 mm between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. The city is expected to continue experiencing consistent rainfall from May 29 to June 2, with moderate showers on May 29 and lighter rainfall on May 30-31.
This early onset and the forecast of above-normal rainfall are significant for agriculture and water resources in Central and South Peninsular India, which rely heavily on monsoon rains.
"A combination of favourable atmospheric and oceanic conditions has led to the early arrival of the southwest monsoon in India this year," said a meteorological expert.
The early rainfall and positive forecast underscore the importance of preparedness for the monsoon season, which is crucial for the region's economy and ecology.
