Six members of the Mittal family, including three children, were found dead in a parked car in Panchkula, having died by suicide due to overwhelming financial distress.

The family patriarch, Praveen Mittal, left a two-page suicide note revealing their bankruptcy and Rs 20 crore debt as the cause behind the tragedy. The note also requested his cousin to perform their last rites.

“I have gone bankrupt. I am responsible for all this. My father-in-law should not be harassed. The last rites of my family members shall be performed by my cousin,” the note read, according to police.

Praveen Mittal, a businessman who had earlier owned a scrap factory in Himachal Pradesh, faced mounting debts that led to the seizure of his factory, two flats, and vehicles by banks. The family had moved from Hisar to Dehradun and later to Panchkula, where Praveen was driving a taxi to make ends meet.

His cousin, Sandeep Aggarwal, said Praveen had been under constant death threats due to unpaid loans and financial losses from a tours and travel agency he started in Dehradun.

“The family was in debt and no one supported them. Their relatives are millionaires, but they did not help...That's why the family did this,” Sandeep said.

The family had attended a spiritual event at Bageshwar Dham before the incident. Police confirmed the case appears to be a suicide pact, with six found dead inside the car and one dying en route to the hospital.

This tragic event highlights the severe psychological and financial pressures faced by families burdened with unmanageable debt.
