The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered a repoll for the Falta Assembly seat in West Bengal on
May 21, citing severe complaints of electoral malpractices, including intimidation and tampering with voting machines. The decision follows numerous allegations received during the initial polling on
April 29.
The ECI's notification highlights that
285 polling stations will conduct the fresh voting, with results to be counted on
May 24. This comes as the BJP raised concerns of their electronic voting machines (EVMs) being tampered with.
In the wake of these allegations, the ECI arrested three Trinamool Congress workers for voter intimidation and assault.
“Repolling was ordered due to severe electoral offences and subversion,” mentioned the ECI, reflecting the gravity of the situation in the constituency.
On
May 4, election results will be declared for 293 of the 294 Assembly seats across the state, except Falta, underscoring the importance of ensuring a fair electoral process in the region.
The ECI aims to uphold democratic principles by addressing these violations through the repolling process, ensuring that every vote counts legitimately in this crucial assembly election.
