Xabi Alonso is set to reshape Real Madrid's defense by adopting a two centre-back system for the 2025-26 season, a shift from his previous three centre-back approach at Bayer Leverkusen.

The 43-year-old coach is promoting Joan Martinez, who impressed during Real Madrid's pre-season tour in the United States, as the sixth centre-back option. Martinez will be behind established defenders Dean Huijsen, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, Asensio, and David Alaba in the pecking order.

"The idea is for Martinez to be Real Madrid's sixth centre-back for the 2025-26 season," signaling Alonso's trust in the young defender's potential.

Despite his history with a three centre-back formation at Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso is expected to utilize a two centre-back system at Real Madrid, at least initially during the Club World Cup.

"The expectation has been that he will only use two at Real Madrid – at least this is projected to be the case during the Club World Cup," highlighting a tactical adaptation to the squad's strengths.
