The United Nations and UEFA commemorated World Football Day 2025, underscoring football's power as a global catalyst for peace, inclusion, and sustainable development.
Established by a 2024 UN General Assembly resolution marking the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament, World Football Day is now in its second year. It serves as a platform to highlight football's role in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UEFA, a founding member of the UN Football for the Goals initiative, actively promotes sustainability and social impact through football. The organization emphasizes football's ability to unite diverse communities and foster cooperation.
"On this World Football Day, we celebrate more than just a game," said UEFA president Aleksander 0ceferin.
"We celebrate a global movement that inspires, unites, and uplifts. We celebrate healthy lifestyles, teamwork, respect, and inclusion. Football is a universal language that speaks to all ages and cultures, building bridges where words sometimes fall short."The day also spotlights football's contribution to peace, diplomacy, human rights, and environmental stewardship, aligning with the UN's broader goals for a sustainable future.
"We are joining the United Nations in celebrating World Football Day, which aims to galvanise the global football community around sustainable development, peace, diplomacy, human rights, healthy environmental practices, cooperation and inclusion," UEFA stated.
World Football Day 2025 thus reinforces football's unique role as a unifying force that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, promoting global solidarity and positive social change.
