Caoimhin Kelleher is poised to become Brentford’s first-choice keeper following a £12.5 million transfer from Liverpool, potentially rising to £18 million with performance bonuses.
Kelleher, who spent a decade at Liverpool, was a trusted figure in Jurgen Klopp’s cup competitions, notably starting in the 2022 Carabao Cup final against Chelsea where he scored the winning penalty in the shootout.
With Brentford’s current No 1, Mark Flekken, reportedly close to a move to Bayer Leverkusen, Kelleher is expected to step straight into the starting role under manager Thomas Frank.
“Kelleher has enjoyed several memorable moments with the Merseysiders,” highlighting his experience despite limited league appearances.
This transfer marks a significant step for Kelleher, who is leaving Liverpool after ten years to secure regular first-team football.
The deal reflects Brentford’s ambition to strengthen their squad with proven talent, while Liverpool cash in on a player who excelled in cup competitions but was behind Alisson in the pecking order.
“A reported initial fee of £12.5m can rise to £18m if performance-related requirements are met,” indicating the financial terms of the transfer.
Kelleher’s move is expected to bolster Brentford’s goalkeeping options as they prepare for the upcoming season.
