Suryakumar Yadav ruled out of England Tests: sports hernia sidelines star till August

Suryakumar Yadav, the star batsman for Mumbai Indians and India, has been ruled out of the upcoming five-match Test series against England due to a sports hernia. Currently in London for treatment, Yadav is expected to be sidelined until August, missing the crucial start of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.

The Indian team is set to begin the Test series on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds, but Yadav’s absence is a significant blow given his recent form. He was the leading run-scorer for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, amassing 717 runs in 16 innings at an impressive average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.91. Notably, he set a new T20 record by scoring 25 or more runs in all 16 innings, showcasing remarkable consistency.

Reports indicate that the medical procedure for his sports hernia could require one to two months of recovery. The timing of the surgery appears tactical, as India has no T20 International commitments until August, when they tour Bangladesh for a white-ball series. This allows Yadav to focus on full recovery and return fit for the upcoming T20 cycle.

Journalist Rohit Juglan noted, "The treatment could take between one and two months to complete." The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Yadav’s decision to prioritize his health now aims to ensure he can contribute fully in the white-ball format later this year, despite missing the early Test matches in England.

This development underscores the challenges teams face balancing player fitness with demanding international schedules, especially with the World Test Championship underway.
