The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to enforce new rules for T20 Internationals (T20Is) starting July 10, following significant changes to One Day Internationals (ODIs) effective July 2.
The ODI modifications include a return to using a single ball throughout each innings, a shift designed to reintroduce reverse swing and restore balance between bat and ball during the later overs. This change will debut in the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh ODI series opener in Colombo on July 2.
In addition to the ball usage, the ICC has overhauled concussion substitute policies. Teams must now name five designated substitutes before matches, covering specific roles: wicketkeeper, batter, seam bowler, spinner, and all-rounder. This aims to streamline concussion replacements and maintain team balance.
Other adjustments involve the Decision Review System (DRS) and boundary catch regulations, reflecting the ICC's commitment to improving fairness and clarity in the game.
"Starting July 2025, ODIs will return to using a single ball by the end of each innings—a move aimed at reintroducing some reverse swing and restoring balance between bat and ball in the latter overs," the report states.
"Teams will now be required to name five designated substitutes—specifically, one each from the categories of wicketkeeper, batter, seam bowler, spinner, and all-rounder—prior to the match," it adds.
The T20I rule changes will follow shortly after, coming into effect on July 10, ensuring consistency and updated regulations across formats.
