Bangladesh waits on Mehidy Hasan Miraz fitness: WTC opener hangs in balance

Bangladesh’s cricket team is anxiously awaiting the fitness status of their key allrounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) opener against Sri Lanka at Galle International Cricket Stadium on June 17.

Miraz, who was recently declared virus-free, remains weak and under close observation, raising concerns about his availability for the crucial two-match Test series. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto emphasized the importance of Miraz’s presence, stating, "Miraz condition is better than before but he is still under observation."

The allrounder has been a vital asset for Bangladesh, having been the highest run-scorer with 598 runs and leading wicket-taker with 41 wickets over the past year, drawing comparisons to the legendary Shakib Al Hasan.

Head coach Phil Simmons confirmed that Miraz would join the team’s final training session after missing a previous one due to fever, highlighting the team’s hope for his recovery. Shanto also acknowledged the impact of Miraz’s potential absence on the team’s combination, saying, "Mehidy's unavailability will surely have an impact on our combination."

Despite the uncertainty, Bangladesh remains optimistic about starting the WTC on a positive note, with Shanto remarking, "We had good preparation back home. I hope we can start the competition very well. We have good memories in Sri Lanka, which will be helpful but every series is a new beginning."

The team conducted an intensive training session at Galle International Stadium as they prepare to face Sri Lanka, hoping Miraz’s fitness improves in time to strengthen their lineup for the opening Test.
