Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has opened up about his difficult early years with the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL), describing the environment as filled with 'poisonous characters' and betrayals.

De Villiers spent three seasons with the franchise, now known as Delhi Capitals, where he faced unexpected challenges despite his talent. He recalled being promised retention by the team but was suddenly released into the auction pool, saying, 'Told I was going to be retained, and the next minute, I saw myself in the auction. I didn’t even know what happened.'

Despite the painful experience, this turn of events became a pivotal moment in his career. After being acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2011 auction, De Villiers' career flourished, and he became an IPL legend.

He also fondly remembered the positive moments during his Delhi stint, especially spending time with cricketing greats like Glenn McGrath and Daniel Vettori, who inspired him as a young player.
