Tesla's sales in Europe suffered a sharp decline in April, plunging 49% year-on-year despite a robust 27.8% increase in the overall electric vehicle market.

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers6 Association (ACEA), Tesla sold just 7,261 cars in April, with registrations halving compared to the same month last year. This contrasts starkly with the broader market trend, where battery electric vehicle sales surged.

"The drop in registrations suggests the brand damage caused by Elon Musk6s political interventions may be lasting," said Russ Mould of investment broker AJ Bell.

In the UK, Tesla's sales were even more severely impacted, with only 512 new vehicles registered in April, marking a 62% decline from the previous year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

This slump is attributed to growing consumer unease in Europe over Musk's political activities and his influence on the Trump administration, which has reportedly caused deep-seated angst on the continent.

Meanwhile, the electric vehicle market overall continues to grow, with battery electric cars rising 27.8% in April, while petrol and diesel cars fell by 22.4% and 24.7%, respectively.

Tesla's challenges in Europe highlight the complex interplay between brand perception and market dynamics, especially as the company navigates political controversies alongside its technological ambitions.
