Steve Bannon, a prominent figure from the Trump administration and host of the influential 'War Room' podcast, has predicted that AI-driven job losses will become a central issue in the 2028 US presidential campaign.
Bannon's warning aligns with concerns from AI industry leaders like Amodei, CEO of a major AI company, who has cautioned that "significant job cuts could occur within five years," particularly affecting white-collar professions such as technology, finance, law, and consulting. Amodei emphasized the urgency for both consumers and lawmakers to prepare for this shift, criticizing the government and AI companies for "sugar-coating" the reality of mass job eliminations.
"Most of them are unaware that this is about to happen. It sounds crazy, people just don't believe it," Amodei said, highlighting the disconnect between public perception and the rapid advancement of AI.
The CEO also warned that unemployment could spike between
10% and 20% in the next five years, as AI increasingly automates entry-level roles traditionally filled by new graduates and interns. This trend is already visible, with Big Tech hiring of new grads dropping by
50% since pre-pandemic levels.
Heather Doshay, a recruiting expert at SignalFire, noted that
"AI is doing what interns and new grads used to do."While past technological revolutions have displaced jobs, they eventually created new ones. However, the speed and scale of AI's impact could wipe out tens of millions of jobs rapidly, making it a critical political and economic issue.
Bannon's forecast that AI job losses will dominate the 2028 campaign underscores the growing political significance of automation and its societal consequences.
