Elon Musk's Starlink has received approval from the Indian government to launch satellite internet services, aiming to offer unlimited data plans at a promotional price below USD 10 (approximately Rs 840) per month.

This aggressive pricing strategy is designed to rapidly grow Starlink's user base in India to 10 million subscribers over the medium to long term, leveraging economies of scale to offset high capital and spectrum costs.

Starlink's technology uses a constellation of thousands of small satellites with laser links, minimizing reliance on ground stations to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet even in remote areas.

However, a report by IIFL Research has raised concerns that capacity constraints could limit subscriber growth and reduce the effectiveness of low pricing as a customer acquisition strategy.

Ashwinder Sethi, partner at Analysys Mason, noted: "Despite the high spectrum charges and license fees, satellite communication companies are expected to initiate services at a low price point in India—likely under USD 10—to ensure significant uptake and amortize fixed costs over a larger customer base."

While Starlink's US pricing is significantly higher, with standard plans at $349 and mini kits at $599, the Indian launch aims to disrupt the market with affordable access.

The challenge remains whether Starlink can scale capacity to meet demand without compromising service quality, as IIFL Research cautions that capacity limits may hinder growth despite the attractive pricing.

This development marks a significant step in expanding internet access across India, especially in underserved regions, but balancing cost, capacity, and quality will be critical for Starlink's success.
