Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has taken decisive action against corruption by firing deputy chief of staff Iryna Mudra as investigations intensify.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) is probing a criminal organization allegedly involving senior officials, including a current MP and a former lawmaker.

"Corruption is only a symptom. The main problem runs much deeper. We have a systemic crisis of governance," said Mykhailo Fedorov, a former defense minister, who called for early elections amid the ongoing turmoil.

The investigation centers on allegations that Mudra and others laundered approximately €3 million (150 million Ukrainian hryvnias) through a state-owned bank to secure bail for former energy minister Herman Halushchenko, who is also under investigation.

NABU claims that the group extracted kickbacks of 10-15% from contracts at Energoatom, Ukraine's state nuclear power company, marking the largest corruption probe of Zelenskyy's presidency.

"Elections have been suspended in Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022," highlighting the precarious political landscape as Zelenskyy's term nears its nominal expiration in spring 2024, with elections deemed impractical during wartime.

Key Insight
“NABU alleges the group laundered around €85 million through Energoatom, with Mudra heard on recordings discussing Sense Bank. Separately, former defence minister Fedorov's call for an early election has intensified pressure on Zelenskyy, who has not been named a suspect.”
