Xbox introduces disc-to-digital feature for physical games, starting with thousands of titles; testing begins August 31 as part of game preservation push

Xbox is set to revolutionize gaming with its new disc-to-digital feature, launching for testing on August 31. This initiative allows players to convert their physical game discs into digital entitlements, enhancing accessibility and preserving game collections for future generations.¹²⁷⁸

Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. “Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature,” said a company VP. Once claimed, players can enjoy benefits like Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, while still retaining the physical disc's functionality.

Microsoft aims to start with thousands of titles, with plans to expand the library over time. “While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come,” stated Ronald, a company representative.⁶

This feature comes amid a broader commitment to game preservation and follows Sony's recent announcement of a shift towards digital-only releases for new PlayStation games after January 2028. Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma emphasized the importance of affordability in gaming, hinting that this feature could allow players to access their old titles on future hardware without needing a disc.⁴⁵
