WhatsApp has introduced a new bill payment feature in India, enabling users to pay utility bills seamlessly within the app. This service, powered by the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), connects users to 22,722 billers across 30 categories, including electricity, gas, and insurance.125
To make a payment, users simply tap the ₹ icon on the home screen, select a bill category, and confirm their details before paying via UPI, debit card, or credit card. The feature also allows users to view past payments and upcoming bills, streamlining the payment process.

Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head of Meta India, emphasized the goal of making bill payments as effortless as sending a message. He stated, “No more juggling apps or tracking multiple due dates. We want to make paying a bill on WhatsApp as effortless as sending a message.”47
The launch comes amid a surge in digital payments in India, with UPI transactions hitting a record high of 24.51 billion in August 2026, reflecting a growing trend towards cashless transactions. WhatsApp's entry into this space aims to capture a larger share of the booming digital payments ecosystem, which has seen a 22% year-on-year increase in transaction volume.3
The feature is being rolled out gradually and is expected to be available to all users on both Android and iOS in the coming weeks, further enhancing WhatsApp's role in everyday financial transactions.
