Kyoto.
His mother,
Nancy Higginbotham, expressed her devastation, stating,
"Our family is heartbroken to share that Weston was found deceased. The grief we feel is impossible to put into words." The Higginbotham family reported an argument about her use of ChatGPT shortly before he went missing, further complicating an already tragic situation.
Weston's disappearance had mobilized significant community support, including a prayer vigil, and a social media campaign that spread awareness and solicited help. The family is grateful for the support received during their search effort, with Nancy noting the valuable assistance from people both in Japan and the U.S., saying,
"We are deeply grateful to the countless people across the United States, Japan, and around the world who shared Weston’s story."His family had planned to engage a professional search and rescue crew in Japan, but upon finding him, the search shifted to mourning the loss of a young man who had promised much in life and academia, noted also due to his advocacy for sustainability in engineering.
