Historically, Iran exported over 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) before the U.S. imposed sanctions, primarily to China. However, exports plummeted to just 260,000 bpd in May due to the blockade. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical shipping route, with traffic levels significantly below prewar figures, where more than 100 vessels transited daily.
