Ukraine targets Russian oil facilities with drone strikes, hitting Tuapse four times in one week amid growing environmental disaster.

Ukraine's drone strikes have intensified against critical Russian oil facilities, particularly targeting Tuapse, which has suffered four attacks in just over two weeks. Local Russian officials reported that a major operation was underway to contain a fire at the port but fortunately, no casualties were reported.

However, the relentless strikes have unleashed significant environmental repercussions, with authorities battling toxic black smoke and oil spills that have resulted in black rain. More than 13,300 cubic metres of fuel oil and contaminated soil have reportedly been cleared from the coastline, indicating the scale of the disaster as Moscow's oil exports face substantial disruption amidst soaring crude prices.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asserted that recent operations showcase the improved range and accuracy of Ukrainian drones, evidenced by strikes not only in Tuapse but also against facilities over 1,500 kilometers away from Ukraine. Reports indicate that nearly all oil storage tanks were set ablaze at a Transneft facility. Such activities are aimed at crippling Russia’s oil revenues, a crucial funding source for its ongoing military operations in Ukraine.

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukraine's long-range strike campaign is a testament to its strategic adaptation, exploiting the vast geography of Russia, which complicates comprehensive air defense coverage for critical facilities across its expansive territory.
