Nirmal 'Nims' Purja, a celebrated climber, is missing after a massive avalanche struck Broad Peak, burying at least ten climbers. The avalanche occurred on Thursday, July 30, during a summit attempt, prompting immediate search and recovery operations.

Mingma G, a legendary climber, confirmed that recovery efforts are ongoing, stating, “We have located nine of the climbers and are now looking for Sohail and working on retrieving the bodies.” Four bodies have been recovered, including those of Omani climber Nadhira Al-Harthy and Pur Bahadur Gurung of Nepal.234

The avalanche swept climbers down the mountain's main west-facing gully, with reports indicating that the entire team has been out of communication since the incident. “This is a moment I deeply wish none of us ever had to face,” said Chhang Dawa Sherpa, expedition director at Seven Summit Treks.5

Purja, known for his record-breaking climbs, was among those caught in the avalanche. His GPS device showed movement after the fall, raising hopes for his survival. “Nims location is moving brother,” said Mingma Gyabu Sherpa, cofounder of Elite Exped, expressing hope that Purja is still alive.

Search and rescue operations continue, with both Nepali and Pakistani authorities involved. The situation remains critical as climbers and their families await news.7

Recovery efforts are complicated by the harsh conditions of the Karakoram region, where the avalanche struck. “Ground rescue teams were deployed, and we worked closely with the Pakistani authorities to coordinate helicopter-supported search operations,” noted a spokesperson.

As the search continues, the climbing community remains hopeful for the safe return of Purja and the other missing climbers.
