Two people were killed and six others wounded, including three police officers, during a shooting at the Shoreline Plaza complex in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon. Emergency services responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 4:30 pm local time.1
Sgt Garrett Parten of the Minneapolis Police Department reported that officers arrived within three minutes to find multiple victims and continued gunfire from an upper floor. “They followed the sound of gunfire to the upper floor of the building, and on that floor, officers encountered a haze that significantly limited their visibility,” he said.
The gunman opened fire on the approaching officers, injuring two. A third officer was also hurt but not shot. The suspect was later found dead inside the building. Bill Peterson, the interim police chief, noted, “We were familiar with who this individual was.”
One civilian died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center. The three injured officers are in stable condition, with one undergoing emergency surgery for gunshot wounds to the abdomen and another shot in the leg.
Mayor Jacob Frey praised the officers' bravery, stating, “I can’t emphasise enough how dangerous the situation was and how heroic our officers were in their response.” The investigation continues, with authorities yet to determine a motive for the shooting.
“This is a tremendously tragic event, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” said Sgt Parten.
“The shooting occurred in the Loring Park neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a multi-agency response from the ATF and FBI. Authorities have not yet released a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.”
