Two correctional officers and inmate Kiara Mooswa were killed in a tragic crash involving a box truck and a Correctional Service Canada minivan on Thursday at a rural intersection in Alberta. The incident occurred just before noon at the intersection of Highway 13 and Highway 41, approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
The deceased have been identified as Ramandeep Kaur Maan, 25, from Winnipeg; Nicolae Serban, 57, from Sherwood Park, Alberta; and Kiara Mooswa, 24, from North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Mooswa was serving a seven-year sentence that began in 2024.
Lawrence Hartigan, acting regional deputy commissioner for Correctional Service Canada, expressed that it is an “incredibly sad time for the public safety community in Canada,” while Talal Dakalbab, Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada, extended condolences to Mooswa's family, friends, and community, stating, “We also mourn the loss of Kiara Mooswa, who was in our care and custody at the time of the accident.”
The driver of the box truck was hospitalized with minor injuries, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash, according to RCMP Staff Sgt. James Morton.
