- The USS Abraham Lincoln has had its deployment extended from its original May return date to support operations against Iran, and the lack of a U.S. carrier in the Pacific may be short-lived if the Navy deploys another in the next couple of months.
- China conducted naval exercises with Indonesia this week, showed signs of aggression toward Japan and the Philippines, and conducted operations near the Scarborough Shoal and off Okinotori.
- Adm. Frank Bradley, head of the U.S. Special Operations Command, has been reassuring Washington's commitment, telling Filipino counterparts that U.S. special operations forces are ready to step up joint exercises.
- Analysts say the carrier deployments are running some American sailors ragged, while the Trump administration further retreats from the Asia-Pacific region and China 'is quite happy with U.S. distraction'.
- The USS Gerald R. Ford returned home in mid-May after a record deployment since the Vietnam War, during which it supported the fight against Iran and of Venezuela’s then-leader, Nicolás Maduro, and experienced a fire in a laundry space.
- The carrier's absence gives China another opportunity to show its strength, as Bryan Clark, a former Navy submariner and defense analyst at the Hudson Institute, said China is using it to demonstrate that the U.S. is not the big dog in the western Pacific anymore.
- Evan Sankey, a policy analyst at the Cato Institute, said aircraft carriers provide psychological assurance to U.S. allies, and their absence adds to the sense that the U.S. is distracted by the Middle East.
- The U.S. is doing the exact opposite of its previously expressed goal of pulling out of the Middle East, according to Greg Poling, director of the Southeast Asia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
“The USS Gerald R. Ford returned home in mid-May after its longest deployment since the Vietnam War, which included a fire in a laundry space that forced a turnaround. Analysts say the carrier absence gives China a chance to show strength, as Beijing conducts exercises with Indonesia and shows aggression toward Japan and the Philippines.”
