Fire authorities confirmed that the possibility of a BLEVE—a powerful explosion caused by heated chemicals—had been eliminated, though evacuation orders remain in effect for nearly 50,000 residents.56
As of Monday, temperatures around the tank had decreased to 93 degrees Fahrenheit, after previously peaking above 100 degrees. “This is a positive development,” said a fire department spokesman, crediting the quick actions of emergency responders.
In addition to FEMA aid, the American Red Cross has mobilized over 100 responders and set up multiple shelters for evacuees.
